I love celebrations and birthdays are the epitome of that. Each year, my expectations and excitement rise as I turn a year older. Turning 22 symbolises a milestone being reached that I feel fortunate for. This year, I’ve been fortunate to have incredible people in my life which meant that my birthday was about as epic as it gets.
It started on the 1st, when I was picked up by #BestieForTheRestie. She had Taylor Swift’s ’22’ blasting on the radio, helium balloons floating in the car alongside my birthday crown. We went out for some decadent hot chocolate with my sister, listening to birthday themed songs all the way. Afterwards, we enjoyed dinner with my parents where I was gifted with the most delicious coconut dessert on the house.
My best friend gifted me with the best present one could ask for- experiences. Experiences mean so much more than material gifts. Everything was a surprise which added o the excitement, although it also meant that I asked about 100 annoying questions, trying to figure it all out. It started with massages (how lucky am I?), followed by a night out at my favourite club.
The next day, we headed to a beautiful mountainous area just outside the city. The surprise awaiting me was horse riding! I used to ride and haven’t been in a long time so I really loved this. What made this even more incredible was the fact that we were able to go on an outride inside a game reserve. We saw bucks, a giraffe and a zebra (which we actually got to touch!).
The weekend celebrations ended off with a family lunch and some down time overlooking the beauty of Johannesburg that we call home. I feel so blessed to have such truly amazing people in my life. I’ve never had anyone go to the lengths that my best friend went to for me this weekend and for that I will be forever grateful.
This year, I hope to build on the memories that I have collected at 21. This is the first time in my life where I don’t necessarily have it all planned out, in terms of my future. But maybe thats what your 20s are for. This will be the year I learn to let go and let live.
